The terrible lizards: deinos (terrible) + sauros (Lizard)
Currently, there are over 700 species of dinosaurs identified, divided into about 300 or so genera.
However, scientists believe there are at least 700-900 more species waiting to be found.
As well, it is possible that there are many smaller species of dinosaurs that may have been misidentified. This is because while fossils give us a good idea of a dinosaur's anatomy, size does not mean age. Because juvenile dinosaurs undergo severe body changes as they mature, smaller dinosaurs may have been misidentified as entirely different species.

Some dinosaurs.

And here are more dinosaurs, because why not?
In 1888, Harry Govier Seeley split dinosaurs into two groups based on their hip structure. There was the Order Saurischia ("lizard-hipped" dinosaurs) and the order Ornithischia ("bird-hipped" dinosaurs). Both orders probably had a common ancestor from sometime during the Middle Triassic period. Here are some sub-groups within these orders and some examples.
